Angels and Demons

The concert Angels and Demons brings together works in which composers explore emotional and stylistic opposites: light and darkness, the sublime and the passionate, the spiritual and the earthly. The main idea was to select works from different eras and artistic movements, showing how composers use harmony, rhythm, and timbral colour to express extreme emotional states. Bach’s chorales in Myra Hess’s arrangement, Sonata No. 31, and Messiaen create the bright, angelic side of the programme, while Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Scriabin, and Bartók explore “dark worlds” filled with drama and tension. At the end of the concert, Pavane for a Dead Princess, one of Maurice Ravel’s most elevated and luminous works, opens a space for reflection and contemplation, seeking harmony between opposing forces.
